Carpet care guide
The honest answer is: it depends on your household and, here in Newcastle, on the climate. Here is a simple way to think about it.
Most carpet manufacturers suggest a professional clean roughly once a year, and for a lot of homes that is spot on. But an annual clean is a starting point, not a rule. What actually matters is how much your carpet is asked to absorb between cleans, and near the coast that tends to be more than people expect.
Carpet is effectively a large air filter lying on your floor. It catches dust, grit, skin cells, pollen and moisture until it simply cannot hold any more, and then it starts releasing it back into the room. Three things speed that up in our region:
Rather than one date for the whole house, match the frequency to how hard each area works:
A quick check: run your hand across a hidden edge of the carpet, then across a main walkway. If the walkway feels rougher, flatter or grubbier, it is holding grit and it is time for a clean.
Regular vacuuming is the single best thing you can do to make a professional clean last. It lifts the loose grit before it grinds into the fibres. Aim for the high-traffic areas a couple of times a week, slow enough that the vacuum actually pulls the dirt up rather than skating over it. Vacuuming will not replace a deep clean, though: it only reaches the surface layer, while hot water extraction flushes the grime out of the base of the pile.
Many carpet warranties ask for periodic professional cleaning, and some specify hot water extraction by name. If your carpet is still under warranty, keeping the receipt from each professional clean is worth doing. It costs you nothing and can matter if you ever need to make a claim.
