• Vacuum the high-traffic paths often. Pet hair and dander build up fastest where animals sleep and where they walk. A couple of slow passes a week in those spots does more than one big vacuum a fortnight.
• Wipe paws after wet or beach walks. A towel by the door catches the salt, sand and mud before it reaches the carpet, which is exactly the abrasive grit that wears fibres down here on the coast.
• Groom pets regularly. More hair caught in the brush is less hair worked into the carpet.

2. Rinse gently with cool water and blot again. Avoid hot water, which can set some stains.
3. Skip the harsh supermarket stain sprays on wool or unknown fibres. Some can bleach or damage carpet. If you are unsure, less is safer, and a professional clean can follow up.
